It Chapter Two made text what had only been subtext in Stephen King's original book: wise-cracking Losers' Club member Richie Tozier is a gay man, and has romantic feelings for his fellow. The idea of Richie being gay is not completely absent from the book version of IT. Stephen King did hint at Richie's sexuality subtly throughout the text, but it was screenwriter Gary Dauberman's decision to make it more of a storyline in the movie.

In IT: Chapter 2, Richie's sexuality is used as a weapon against him in the form of Pennywise transforming and chasing him as a chapter Paul Bunyan statue, and singing "I know your secret, your dirty little secret.". In IT Chapter Two, Richie’s sexuality is key to his journey of self acceptance.
He remembers a specific moment in which he was publicly humiliated and shamed, which then leads into an encounter. Stephen King is also a massive fan of this film and reportedly gave an enthusiastic blessing to this subplot, according to Vanity Fair. Mostly this revelation becomes clear through two scenes. There are more in-depth queer readings to be made of Eddie based on the book, miniseries, and film, including a direct parallel in the novel between the murdered Adrian Mellon and Eddie that is mirrored in the film.
